Andrée De Jongh, a 24 year old Belgian woman created the Comet Line in 1941 and it was her father, Frédéric De Jongh, who gave her the nickname "Petit Cyclone". This evasion network for repatriating Allied airmen endured the longest of all during the Nazi occupation in WWII.

Altogether some 328 airmen passed through the Basque Country en route to London.

Here is our song - In Homage to the Comet Line "Little Cyclone" Dominique Aguerre wrote the lyrics while Mixel Suhubiette set it to music, and both are members of the association "The Friends of the Comet Line".

It is performed here by the Adour Océan Marine Choir of the Adour naval air base at Anglet, in the Basque Country, under the direction of Jean Luc Casterets, accompanied by Jean Pierre Marlin on the accordion.

26. Les bombardiers - the bombers

In 1909, Louis Blériot made his epic flight across the grey waters of the English Channel in his flimsy Blériot XI monoplane, made of ash and linen, propelled by a single 7 cylinder 35hp engine.

In little more than 30 years later, in a massive technological leap forward, great formations of 4-engined all metal bombers were flying in the opposite direction to lay waste the poisoned landscape of the Third Reich:

These were the principal bomber aircraft operated by RAF Bomber Command: the Vickers Wellington, the De Havilland Mosquito, the Short Stirling, the Handley Page Halifax and the Avro Lancaster.

The twin mainstays of the 8th Air Force, USAAF were these two heavy bombers: the Boeing Flying Fortress B-17 and the Consolidated Liberator B-24:

25. Le Dernier Passage - The Last Passage
