Dear friends,

The Comet weekend in the Pays Basque 2019, organised by the "Friends of the Comet Line" Association for 13th-15th September, promises to be especially memorable this year for several reasons. The 3 day commemorative weekend will be marked by a number of ceremonies and themes as follows:
  • a souvenir plaque will be unveiled at Bayonne railway station on the Friday as a tribute to those of the Bayonne network;
  • the Town Hall, Anglet has kindly commissioned a memorial sculpture in honour of the men and women of the Comet Line. It will be situated at the Place Lamothe, Anglet, and it will also be inaugurated on the Friday;
  • this year sees the 75th anniversary of the last passage by evading Allied airmen;
  • finally, 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of "Les amis du réseau Comète".
Saturday and Sunday will see us walking over the original route taken by the Comet guides and the evaders over the Pyrenees, starting at Ciboure on the Saturday, including wading through the Bidassoa, after which we'll all enjoy the traditional sardinade served by our Spanish friends from the Urdaburu association. After an early start on Sunday morning, we'll then head for Sarobe farm, the 'safe' house in Spain that was a welcome haven for so many airmen, before we finish up with a communal meal (and singing!) in a cider house near Biriatou.

We're looking forward to seeing you all again - to re-kindle once again the spirit of Comète among friends - both old and new. Please keep these dates (13-15 September) free in your diaries. If you do have any questions of a general nature at this stage, then please don't hesitate to ask us (use the contact form in the left hand margin).

31. George and Janet Duffee RIP

George and Janet
It is with deep regret and much sadness that we have to announce the passing of noted Comète evader George Duffee on 21st December 2018 aged 94. Janet, his beloved wife, predeceased him by 2½ weeks. They had been married for 72 years.

They were truly a devoted couple and it was touching to see that after all these years, they were still clearly very much in love. He was a charismatic gentleman, with an ever-present twinkle in his eye and always ready with a quip. He epitomised the spirit of that great generation, the like of which I doubt we'll ever see again. He remained true to the noble ideals that saw him through that dark period of history.

George at the Office
Flying on his first operational mission on 78 Squadron as ‘2nd dickey’ (ie, co-pilot for operational acclimatisation), George had the misfortune to be shot down in his Halifax by a German night fighter during the return from Mulheim during the night of 22-23rd June 1943. He told me that he'd left his parents’ house in London after a week's leave on the morning of the 22nd and less than 24 hours later he found himself standing in a potato field in the wee small hours near Beugt, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. (His full story here)

Helped by Comète, he was the 144th evader to cross the Pyrenees, which he did on a wet September night in 1943 during the course of an extended 14 hour crossing. This epic slog made a lasting impression on 19 year old George and after the war he returned many times to Belgium and the Pays Basque to thank those of Comète who'd given him his life back at great personal risk to themselves.

On returning to the UK, he went on to fly 39 further operational missions with 78 Squadron and he was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). Post war, he was actively involved in the Berlin airlift with the RAF and Bond Air Services before joining British European Airways (BEA) where he progressed from Vikings, Dakotas, Viscounts and Tridents before ultimately becoming a Training Captain on Tristars. He enjoyed a distinguished career with British Airways where, as he would say, "No-one shot at me - it was lovely!" before retiring to Spain in 1979. In 2007, George and Janet returned to the UK to Aberaeron, Ceredigion in West Wales to be nearer to son Tim and daughter Helen.

George wrote the following in 2013: "In 1947, I returned to Brussels with my wife and again stayed with Professor and Mme Pirart and through them met Andrée de Jongh and her friend Germaine, a fellow survivor of Ravensbruck. We continued to visit our Comete helpers, Michou Dumon ("Lily") and her sister Andrée ("Nadine") in Brussels every year, together with other members of the Royal Air Forces Escaping Society, until it was disbanded in 1995."

"In 1951, this time with our son Tim, we returned to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and stayed at Kattalin Aguirre's house in Ciboure and in 1955, (visiting with Tim and Helen), I was once again walking over the Pyrenees with Florentino. We still visit St Jean de Luz to this day and together with Lily Dumon's sister Nadine, lay wreaths on the graves of Kattalin and Florentino whilst the younger members of our families walk over the Pyrenees together."

"In 1955, my young brother-in-law visited the Netherlands on a student exchange and called in to see Martin der Kinderen, my first contact in occupied Holland. He was treated to a ride on the same bicycle which had been lent to me and returned with a message that we should visit Martin. This was the beginning of a lifelong friendship which culminated in Martin celebrating his 80th birthday with us in Spain. This year, his daughter Uus joined us for the Escape Lines Memorial Society (ELMS) annual reunion dinner in York."

For a man who had experienced such a full and active life the cruel restrictions placed upon George by the advancing years were just another challenge for him to overcome with his customary stoicism, bravery and grace; and his insistence on outliving Janet yet another example of his gallantry and lifelong consideration for her.

Listen to George describing his experiences in his own words here.

They'll be greatly missed by their many friends in the Pays Basque and beyond.

RIP George and Janet

Andrée De Jongh, a 24 year old Belgian woman created the Comet Line in 1941 and it was her father, Frédéric De Jongh, who gave her the nickname "Petit Cyclone". This evasion network for repatriating Allied airmen endured the longest of all during the Nazi occupation in WWII.

Altogether some 328 airmen passed through the Basque Country en route to London.

Here is our song - In Homage to the Comet Line "Little Cyclone" Dominique Aguerre wrote the lyrics while Mixel Suhubiette set it to music, and both are members of the association "The Friends of the Comet Line".

It is performed here by the Adour Océan Marine Choir of the Adour naval air base at Anglet, in the Basque Country, under the direction of Jean Luc Casterets, accompanied by Jean Pierre Marlin on the accordion.
