COMMÉMORATIONS BIDASSOA 2023

Nos commémorations 2023 viennent de se terminer. Elles se sont déroulées dans les meilleures conditions, mise à part l’impossibilité de traverser la Bidassoa samedi, le niveau du fleuve étant trop élevé au point de passage historique de San Miguel.

If it seems as though our Commemorative Comète weekend finished months ago, you'd be right! (Covid struck your scribe - Geoff - a glancing blow and recovery was a lot slower than he expected. GC) We had ideal conditions - apart from the impossibility of crossing the Bidassoa on Saturday, the level of the river being too high at the historic crossing point at San Miguel.  

Je viens, au nom de tous les Amis du réseau Comète et plus particulièrement de ceux qui ont participé au week-end vous remercier tous très chaleureusement pour votre contribution majeure au succès des journées du souvenir.

90 marcheurs ont participé à notre marche depuis Socoa jusqu’à Biriatou. Cérémonie très émouvante aux stèles. Impossibilité de traverser la Bidassoa - beaucoup trop dangereuse. Grand pique - nique sur le fronton de Biriatou organisé par nos amis de Guipuzkoa.

90 walkers took part in our walk from Socoa to Biriatou. Very moving ceremony at the memorials to Count Antoine d’Ursel and 2^nd Lt James F Burch USAAF. Crossing the Bidassoa was deemed to be high risk and so the picnic site was changed to the fronton at Biriatou, well organised by our friends from Guipuzkoa.

130 personnes ont participé à la marche et à l’hommage très emouvant rendu à Paco Iriarte à Sarobe.

Nous serons cette année sur la Bidassoa, sur les pas des aviateurs et des passeurs comme entre 1941 à 1943.

53. Pourquoi une BD - why a Bande Déssinée?

Pourquoi une BD? C'est une longue histoire - mais l'événement qui a finalement déclenché la production de la Comète BD s'est produit lors d'un de nos récents week-ends Comète commémoratifs. En regardant autour de nous les participants, il nous a semblé que nous étions plus ou moins tous d'un âge 'avancé'. Comment transmettre aux nouvelles générations ? 

Il nous a semblé un bonne idée, que cette magnifique histoire du réseau Comète touche et inspire les jeunes générations. Surtout que beaucoup d'acteurs de Comète étaient eux-mêmes très jeunes, certains à Comète n'avaient que 15 ans tandis que d'autres les aviateurs n'avaient qu'une poignée d'années de plus.

Nous sommes intervenus dans plusieurs écoles dans la région pour parler aux élèves de Comète. Ils étaient surpris d'apprendre que cette histoire se soit déroulée dans les villes et villages dont ils connaissaient tous les lieux. Surpris, et à vrai dire assez émus aussi de découvrir cette nouvelle histoire, et du lien existant entre l’histoire de la Seconde Guerre avec un grand H et ces mêmes lieux, qu’ils fréquentaient tous les jours.

Comment se fait-il qu'ils ne connaissent pas ce magnifique chapitre de l'histoire locale? Il existe plusieurs livres consacrés à la narration de l'histoire de Comète ; il existe des sites Web et des blogs; il y a des vidéos sur YouTube – mais il semble que ces moyens de transmission de l'histoire de Comète ne soient pas parvenus à la jeunesse d'aujourd'hui.

En échangeant avec Mr Jean Michel Barate, Premier - Adjoint à la Mairie d’Anglet et Mme Liane Béobide, Directrice de la Culture - nous avons examiné toutes les pistes possibles (et abordables) qui s'offraient à nous pour raconter notre histoire. 

C'est Mme Béobide qui a souligné le fait que les jeunes d'aujourd'hui sont de grands lecteurs de BD et que les BD présentent plusieurs avantages par rapport aux autres possibilités médiatiques: ils sont portables ; n'a pas besoin d'énergie ; ils mêlent texte et images graphiques ; et ils peuvent être facilement échangés et diffusés entre amis.

Au final, nous avons pris la décision de réaliser une BD Comète - prise en charge financièrement dans son intégralité par la ville d'Anglet. Nous avons eu la chance de découvrir que « Marko » - un dessinateur de BD talentueux - vivait sur place et il a constitué une équipe composée de l'historien/scénariste Jean - Yves Lenahour; Inaki Holgado dans le rôle de l'artiste et coloriste Arheta Battistuta, de la compagnie Bamboo.

Plusieurs d'entre nous, de notre association, se sont associés aux auteurs, sous la direction de Mme Beobide, pour produire un bouleversant document qui figure en fin de chaque BD.

Nous remercions particulièrement les familles de Comète qui nous ont fourni des documents historiques émouvants. Nos guides Comète ont emmené les auteurs de la BD dans certains sites historiques, leur permettant ainsi d'appréhender 80 années après les lieux historiques et leurs paysages.

La Bande Dessinée a été officiellement présentée au public invité à la Mairie d'Anglet le 24 mai et mise en vente dans tous les points de vente habituels du territoire national.

Dans son discours, notre président a parlé de façon émouvante de notre association, de notre devoir de transmettre et pourquoi, avec l'accent que nous mettons sur les valeurs, elle est différente de toutes les autres.....

Comme il le dit lui-même.... " ce n'est pas une association de club de pétanque....." !

Why a Comic Strip?*

It’s a long story but the event that eventually triggered the production of the Comète Bande Dessinée (BD) occurred during one of our recent commemorative Comète weekends. On looking around the participants, it struck us that we were more or less all of a certain age group. In other words, we had no millennials with us! It seemed remarkable to us that this magnificent story of the Comète network hadn’t touched and inspired the younger generations – especially as many of those actively involved in Comète were themselves young - some of the Comète helpers were just 15 years old while some of the aviators were just a handful of years older.

* BDs are extremely popular in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. To the Anglophone ear, the use of a 'comic strip' to tell the story of Comète could sound a discordant note - but think of a BD as a story told graphically in drawn panels.   

We’d visited several schools in and around the local area to talk to pupils about Comète and while they were surprised to hear that this story had played out in the very towns and villages that they were all familiar with – we were surprised to find that it was all new to them. How was it that they were unfamiliar with this magnificent chapter of local history? There are several books devoted to the telling of the Comète story; there are websites and blogs; there are videos on YouTube – but it seemed that these means of transmitting the Comète story had bypassed today’s youth.

In discussions with Mr Jean Michel Barate and Mme Liane Béobide of the Town Hall, Anglet we examined all the possible (and affordable) avenues of approach open to us to tell our story. It was Mme Béobide who highlighted the fact that today’s youth are avid readers of BDs and that BDs have several advantages when compared to other media possibilities: they are portable; need no power supply; they mix text and graphic images; and they can be easily exchanged and circulated among friends.     

In the end, we took the decision to produce a Comète BD - financially supported in its entirety by the town of Anglet. We were fortunate to find that “Marko” - a talented BD designer – lived locally and he put a team together, comprising the historian/scriptwriter Jean - Yves Lenahour; Inaki Holgado as the artist and colourist Arheta Battistuta, from the Bamboo company.

A number of us from our association combined with the authors, under the direction of Mme  Beobide, the Director of Culture, Anglet, to produce a short history of Comète that is included at the end of the BD.

We would particularly like to thank the families of Comète who provided us with moving historical documents. Our Comète guides took the BD authors to some of the historic sites, thus enabling them to gain a sense of the landscape.   

The BD was formally presented to an invited audience at the Town Hall, Anglet on 24 May and it went on sale at all the usual outlets nationwide.

In his speech, our president spoke movingly of our association – and why, with our emphasis on values, it is different to all others. As he says himself – it’s not an association for pétanque.  

Please note: There will be a 'BD Comète' book signing by "Marko" and a 'round table' discussion between 5:00-7:00 p.m at the Librairie Elkar, Bayonne on Thursday, 7th September.

52. Randonnée Comète - Comet Hike 2023

Les créateurs sont les dessinateurs Marko et Inaki Holgado et l’historien Jean Yves Lenahour. La coloriste est Aretha Battisttuta. Nous reviendrons avec un prochain article, après la soirée de présentation qui doit de dérouler le 24 mai prochain à la mairie d’Anglet.

Queridos miembros, queridos amigos

Nuestro fin de semana conmemorativo de Comète tendrá lugar del 8 al 10 de septiembre de 2023 en la ruta 'Classic' (también conocida como 'Bidassoa'), desde Ciboure, Urrugne, Bidassoa antes de terminar en Sarobe Farm.

Las actividades del viernes 8 consistirán en nuestro AG seguido de ceremonias por la tarde y noche.

El sábado 9 y el domingo 10 estarán dedicados a la caminata por el recorrido original de los Pirineos utilizado por los guías Comet y los evasores desde 1941 hasta 1943, después de lo cual fue suplantado mayoritariamente por el recorrido interior.

Recomendamos que los participantes se basen para fines de alojamiento en Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Septiembre todavía es temporada alta en la Costa Vasca, por lo que se recomienda a los participantes que hagan sus arreglos de alojamiento pronto.

50. Andrée Dumon - "Nadine"

"Quand j'ai commencé mes activités dans la Résistance, je savais qu'un jour ou l'autre je pourrais être arrêté, interrogé, torturé peut-être. J'étais prêt à en payer le prix."

Née à Uccle, Bruxelles, le 5 septembre 1922, Andrée Dumon, une jeune fille déterminée qui n'a pas encore dix-huit ans lorsque les Allemands envahissent la Belgique en mai 1940, cherche aussitôt à réagir par tous les moyens contre l'occupant méprisé. D'abord distributrice de journaux clandestins, puis servante de coursière à son père, actif dans la Résistance grandissante, elle aide bientôt les hommes qui veulent se rendre en Angleterre.

Il s'agissait de soldats belges ainsi que de soldats britanniques en route vers la France dans le but de rejoindre leurs unités pour reprendre le combat. Plus tard, elle a commencé à guider des aviateurs abattus de la RAF et d'autres Belges de Bruxelles à travers la frontière belgo-française en direction du sud vers l'Espagne neutre.

Elle se rendit jusqu'à Paris pour de telles missions mais fut dénoncée par un collaborateur belge et arrêtée à son domicile.

Son histoire poignante et émouvante raconte sa volonté indomptable, son courage et sa résilience, essayant de survivre aux horribles épreuves et privations dans de nombreuses prisons et camps de l'Allemagne nazie. Son livre parle également de ses compatriotes avec qui elle a partagé son amour de la liberté et un vibrant hommage aux nombreuses personnes qui ont perdu la vie en la défendant. Ils ne sont pas oubliés.

Après l'auto-publication de "Je ne vous ai pas oubliés" en 2013, on a demandé à Andrée Dumon pourquoi il lui avait fallu si longtemps pour raconter toute l'histoire, notamment les détails sur sa détention et les conditions épouvantables dans les camps nazis. Elle m'a répondu : "Au début, je ne voulais pas parler et mon mari Gustave ne m'a pas encouragée. Je voulais préserver ma famille - jusqu'au jour, très longtemps après, où des amis m'ont suggéré d'écrire en effet toute l'histoire". Elle a ajouté: "Maintenant, je pense que nous devons raconter notre histoire parce que les jeunes devraient vraiment savoir - pour le bien de ceux qui sont morts. Ces "vous" dans le titre étaient mes compagnons de combat. Et si j'avais un message à donner aux jeunes générations, ce serait de découvrir tout ce que leurs aînés ont fait pour défendre nos libertés dans l'espoir qu'ils feraient de même au cas où ces libertés seraient à nouveau menacées."

Ce livre de 2022 "Je ne t'ai pas oublié" est une traduction fidèle de l'original "Je ne vous ai pas oubliés" d'Andrée Dumon. C'est un hommage à son dynamisme, son humanité et son charisme, et le résultat d'une promesse qui lui avait été faite par sept de ses nombreux amis qui ont travaillé ensemble pour traduire ses paroles en anglais. Il s'agit de Geoff Cooper (France), Fred et Joan Grayer (Royaume-Uni), Keith Janes (Royaume-Uni), Michael LeBlanc (Canada), John Morgan (Irlande) et Edouard Renière (Belgique). Pour mieux connaître ces « Vous » qu'elle n'oubliera jamais, les traducteurs ont annoté nombre d'entre eux après des recherches dans diverses archives. Cette nouvelle traduction "I have not forgotten you" n'est actuellement disponible qu'en contactant Keith Janes via son site. Le livre est au prix de 10,00 £ - avec un affranchissement à une adresse au Royaume-Uni actuellement de 3,30 £. "When I started my activities in the Résistance, I knew that one day or another I could be arrested, interrogated, tortured maybe. I was ready to pay the price.” 

Born in Uccle, Brussels, on 5 September 1922, Andrée Dumon, a determined young girl, not yet eighteen when the Germans invaded Belgium in May 1940, immediately sought to react in any way she could against the despised Occupier. Starting with the distribution of clandestine newspapers, then serving as a courier for her father, active in the growing Résistance, she soon was helping men who wanted to get to England. 

These were Belgians as well as British soldiers on their way to France with the aim of rejoining their units to resume the fight. Later, she began guiding downed RAF airmen and Belgians from Brussels across the Belgian-French border on their way south to neutral Spain. 

She went as far as Paris on such missions but was denounced by a Belgian collaborator and arrested at her home. 

Her poignant, moving story tells of her indomitable willpower, courage and resilience, trying to survive the horrible hardships and privations in many of the prisons and camps of Nazi Germany. Her book is also about her fellow compatriots with whom she shared her love of freedom and is a vibrant homage to those who lost their lives in defending it. They are not forgotten.

After the self-publication of "Je ne vous ai pas oubliés" in 2013, Andrée Dumon was asked why it had taken her so long to tell the full story, especially the details about her detention and the horrific conditions in the Nazi camps. She replied, “At the beginning, I didn't want to talk and my husband Gustave didn't encourage me. I wanted to preserve my family - until the day, very long after, when some friends suggested to me that I should indeed write down the whole story.” She added, “Now I think we have to tell our story because younger people should really know - for the sake of those who died. Those ‘you' in the title were my companions in the fight. And if I have a message to give to the younger generations, it would be to discover all that their elders had done to defend our freedoms in the hope that they would do the same in case those freedoms should ever be threatened again."

This 2022 book “I have not forgotten you” is a faithful translation of Andrée Dumon's original "Je ne vous ai pas oubliés". It is a tribute to her dynamism, her humanity and her charisma, and the result of a promise that had been made to her by seven of her many friends who have worked together to translate her words into English. They are Geoff Cooper (France), Fred and Joan Greyer (UK), Keith Janes (UK), Michael LeBlanc (Canada), John Morgan (Ireland) and Edouard Renière (Belgium). For additional knowledge of those “You” she'll never forget, the translators have added notes for many of them after research in various archives. This new translation “I have not forgotten you” is currently only available by contacting Keith Janes through his site. The book is priced at £10.00 - with postage to a UK address currently £3.30. Postal costs for more than one book, or to an overseas address, along with details of how to make payment (BACS, PayPal or cheque), will be given on request. Note that we, the translators, are paying all the costs of producing this book, with any profits going to Mme Andrée Dumon, or whosoever she might choose to designate.

The book is priced at £10.00 with postage (large letter) extra at cost - currently £3.30 to UK addresses, £6.25 to Europe and £11.10 to the USA

Costs for more than one copy start to get complicated but currently two copies (small parcel) to a UK address is £4.45, to Europe is £9.90 and to the USA is £23.00 (which is more than the cost of two letters so probably best not to use)
