Contacté par Ricardo Hernani, Vice - Président de L'Euskal Mendizale Federazioa (Fédération Basque d'Alpinisme), et grâce a son initiative, nôtre association a été honorée le vendredi 20 octobre à Bilbao lors de leur congrès annuel. Structure associative qui rassemble 242 clubs au Pays - Basque et de ses 42.000 adhérents.
Ricardo Hernani, Vice President of the Euskal Mendizale Federazioa (Basque Mountaineering Federation) contacted our association and, thanks to his initiative, we were honoured to be invited to their annual gala dinner which took place at Bilbao, on Friday evening, 20th October. The EMF brings together 242 clubs in the Basque Country and its 42,000 members.
Malheureusement, l’homme - clé de ces journées, notre précieux ami Geoff Cooper n’à pas pu être des nôtres, ce ne sera que partie remise.
Unfortunately, Geoff Cooper - who had liaised with Ricardo and the Basque Mountaineering Federation (BMF), was unable to take part for health reasons, but he will meet up with Ricardo early in the New Year.
Anglet étant le siège du réseau Comète sud, nous avons Benat Olaizola, Frantxoa Aguerre et moi - même été reçu à la mairie de Bilbao par Monsieur le Maire Juan Maria Aburto dès nôtre arrivée vendredi.
Beñat Olaizola, Frantxoa Aguerre and I were received at Bilbao town hall by Mayor Juan Maria Aburto upon our arrival at midday on Friday.
Nous lui avons transmis une lettre de Monsieur Le Maire d’Anglet et également un livre sur Anglet, avec un exemplaire de la dernière bande dessinée.
With Anglet's historic links with the Comète-South network, we presented him with a letter from Mr Claude Olive, the Mayor of Anglet, a coffee table book on Anglet plus a copy of the bande dessinée launched in May this year.
Je tiens à dire qu’il était très ému, et sincèrement très touché par cette initiative, car enfant, avec ses parents il passait ses vacances à Anglet.
Mr Aburto was very moved, and sincerely very touched by this gesture, because as a child, he had spent his vacations at Anglet with his parents.
Nous avons pu échanger car Monsieur Le Maire connaissait bien l’histoire de notre réseau.
The fact that the Mayor was aware of the history of our network made it easier to discuss our current activities with him.
Il savait parfaitement le rôle prépondérant de la ville d’Anglet avec son siège de Comète - sud et le lien avec le rôle historique de sa ville Bilbao.
He knew that the city of Anglet had played a vital role in hosting the headquarters of Comète-South - and the historic link with his city of Bilbao.
Il a tenu à ce que nous écrivions un mot sur le « livre d'or » de la ville pour célébrer ce lien historique. Nous y avons fait référence au rôle tenu par Bilbao et le réseau Comète.
He was insistent that we should write a word in the city's “golden book” to celebrate this historical link. In doing so, we stressed the role played by Bilbao and the Comète network.
En effet, en 1941 l’implantation du Consulat Britannique à Bilbao était dirigé par le représentant local du MI9, Michaël Creswell, des services de Winston Churchill à Londres. La capitale de la Biscaye qu’il dirige était chargée d’organiser les opérations de récupérations de tous les aviateurs du réseau Comète, afin qu’ils puissent rejoindre Londres.
Indeed, in 1941 the British Consulate in Bilbao was served by Michael Creswell, a young diplomat (from the Embassy in Madrid) who liaised directly with MI9, a secret department of the War Office in London charged with repatriating shot-down aircrew. The Consulate at Bilbao played a key role in recovering the newly arrived evaders from the hands of the Comète network, so that they could be repatriated to London.
Monsieur le Maire Juan Maria Aburto a tenu à remercier les organisateurs d’Euskal Mendizale Federazioa, son Conseil d’Administration et son Président Zigor Eguia présents. Il les a félicité de nous avoir désigné et honoré pour nos recherches et notre travail de Mémoire, pour ce passage d’Anglet - Ustaritz - Larressore - Espelette et Maya del Baztan, qui a permis à 126 aviateurs de rejoindre Londres.
Mayor Juan Maria Aburto wanted to thank the organizers of Euskal Mendizale Federazioa, its Board of Directors and its President Zigor Eguia who were present. He congratulated them for having chosen and honoured us for our research and our work of Memory, for this passage from Anglet - Ustaritz - Larressore - Espelette and Maya del Baztan, which allowed 126 aviators to reach London.
Nous étions très émus et assez bouleversés par l’immense sollicitude dont nous avons bénéficié pendant tous ce week-end. Des grands moments de partages, d’échanges. Des montagnards, des gens simples et passionnés.. amoureux des sommets qui en parlent avec un immense respect, eux qui côtoient fréquemment les plus hauts sommets du monde.
We were very moved and quite overwhelmed by the kindness and generous hospitality offered to us throughout the weekend. We shared many great moments and exchanges with our hosts - simple and passionate men of the mountains.. lovers of the summits that they speak of them with immense respect, they who frequently come into contact with the highest peaks in the world.
Pour eux, la notion du danger est équivalente. La notion du risque de la vie et de la mort entre les 8000 mètres d’altitude comme sur l’Himalaya qu’ils côtoient fréquemment et le risque pris par les passeurs du réseau Comète dans les sommets beaucoup plus bas est égale.
For them, the notion of the danger to life and limb known by them 8,000 metres up in the Himalayas was equivalent to the risk taken by the passeurs and guides of the Comète network down in the lower peaks of the Pyrenees.
La montagne, le courage, le danger, la vie, la mort, ils nous ont honoré car ils pensaient à tous les membres du réseau, et en particulier à tous nos passeurs. Ils tenaient à nous remercier pour nos travaux, et nos recherches sur les sentiers.. C’est une histoire du coeur, une belle histoire de montagnards, sincère et bouleversante.
The mountains, the courage, the danger, life, death, they honoured us because they thought of all the members of the network, and most particularly of our passeurs and guides. They wanted to thank us for our work, and our research on the trails. It's a story from the heart, a beautiful story of mountain people, sincere and moving.
Je voudrais remercier Monsieur Le Maire d’Anglet d’avoir contribué à ce que notre association soit élevée au plus haut niveau. Merci infiniment de nous avoir permis de pouvoir remercier nos hôtes. Chaque récipiendaire en était ému et sincèrement très touché.
I would like to thank the Mayor of Anglet for contributing to our association being received at the highest level. Thank you very much for allowing us to thank our hosts tangibly. Each recipient was moved and sincerely touched.
