60. Comète 2024

Chers membres, chers amis,

Nous souhaitons informer nos membres et amis pour leurs agendas que notre annuel weekend commémoratif au Pays basque aura lieu les 6, 7 et 8 septembre 2024. Nous emprunterons à pied la route intérieure via Larressore et Espelette utilisée à partir de septembre '43 à juin '44. (Photos de 2022)

Nous recommandons aux personnes souhaitant participer de se baser soit à Bayonne, soit à Anglet, car nos transports seront disponibles depuis ces deux centres. La prise en charge des autocars s'effectuera depuis la place des Basques, Bayonne et la Mairie, rue Amédée Dufourg, Anglet, vous devez vous assurer de sélectionner votre hébergement qui se trouve à une distance de marche confortable des points de prise en charge des bus.  

Le programme complet sera publié comme d'habitude sur notre blog en mai-juin.  Pour les débutants, le vendredi est consacré aux cérémonies commémoratives tandis que la randonnée à travers les montagnes a lieu le samedi et le dimanche. Ce lien - réalisé par Ricardo Hernani - montre le profil de la marche du dimanche.

Dear Members, dear Friends,

We wish to inform our members and friends for their diaries that our annual commemorative long weekend in the Pays basque will take place during 6th, 7th & 8th September 2024. We will be walking over the inland route via Larressore and Espelette that was used from September '43 to June '44. (Photos from 2022)

We would recommend that those wishing to participate should base themselves either at Bayonne or Anglet - as our transport will be available from these two centres.. Coach pick ups and drop-offs will be take place at the place des Basques, Bayonne and the Town Hall, rue Amédée Dufourg, Anglet. You'd be well-advised to ensure that your chosen accommodation is within comfortable walking distance from one or the other of the pick up points.  

For first timers, the Friday is given over to commemorative ceremonies while the walk over the mountains will be on the Saturday and Sunday. This link - kindly made by Ricardo Hernani - shows the walk profile on the Sunday. 

For those participants who, for whatever reason, are unable take part in the walk, a parallel programe will take them in a minibus, meeting up with the walkers at intervals.   

The full programme will be published here in May-June.

59. Bruxelles

Chers Amis,

Jean-Marc nous a fait l'honneur de représenter notre association aux cérémonies de Comète à Bruxelles le 22 octobre dernier.

36 participants aux commémorations « Comet-Line ». Personnes connues : Brigitte d’Oultremont, Elise Lagae, Mme Holvoet, Bernard Holvoet, Michel Houtart, Cécile Houtart, John Clinch.

Sites visités : 

Caserne de gendarmerie/prison allemande dans laquelle Jean Greindl, dirigeant de Comète a été tué lors d’un bombardement allié. 

Enclos des fusillés où 11 membres de Comète ont été exécutés par balle dans un stand de tir de l’armée belge. 

Cimetière de Bruxelles où se trouve un monument aux aviateurs belges et le carré où nombre d’entre eux tués lors de la guerre 39-45 sont inhumés ainsi que la chapelle de la famille Nothomb et le mur des fusillés où plusieurs résistants Comète ont été exécutés. 

Ci-joint, photo du groupe des participants à la journée Comet Line du 22 octobre dernier. Elle est prise devant la plaque apposée sur le portail de la gendarmerie-prison dans laquelle Jean Greindel, ancien chef de Comète a été tué par un bombardement allié en 1943. 

Les plus anciens d'entre vous reconnaitront Mme Holvoet (90 et quelques), à nouveau très vive, son fils Bernard, Elise Lagae, Brigitte, Michel Houtart et sa femme Cécile, John Clinch.

Sites visited:

German gendarmerie barracks/prison in which Jean Greindl, leader of Comète, was killed during an Allied bombing.

Shooting enclosure where 11 members of Comète were shot and killed in a Belgian army shooting range.

Brussels cemetery where there is a monument to Belgian aviators and the square where many of them killed during the 39-45 war are buried as well as the chapel of the Nothomb family and the wall against which several Comète resistance fighters were executed .

Attached, photo of the group of participants in the Comet Line day on October 22. It is taken in front of the plaque affixed to the gate of the gendarmerie-prison in which Jean Greindel, former head of Comète, was killed by an Allied bombing raid in 1943.

The oldest among you will recognize Mrs. Holvoet (90 and some) in good form and her son Bernard, Elise Lagae, Brigitte, Michel Houtart and his wife Cécile, John Clinch.

58. Notre BD - our BD

Le 51e Festival international de la bande dessinée s'est tenu à Angoulême du 25 au 28 janvier 2024 et cette année, notre propre Bande Dessinée (BD) était à l'honneur. Notre association était représentée par "Marko" (storyboard), Jean-Yves Le Naour (scénariste), Dominique Aguerre (président des "Amis de la Ligne Comète") et sa fille Argitxu.

The 51st annual International Comics Festival was held at Angoulême from 25th-28th January 2024 and this year our very own Bande Dessinée (BD) was featured. Our association was represented by "Marko" (storyboard), Jean-Yves Le Naour (scenarist), Dominique Aguerre (president of "Friends of the Comète Line") and his daughter Argitxu.

Notre chère Christiane Saldias avait alors 15 ans et elle raconte ici l'histoire de Comète aux jeunes. Invitée par le collège Endarra, Christiane Saldias, 95 ans, est allée face à des collégiens de 3e, ce 2 février, pour parler du Réseau Comète dont Anglet fut une étape essentielle vers la liberté pour de nombreux aviateurs alliés durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale

« Je m’appelle Christiane Saldias. J’ai 95 ans. Je ne suis ni professeure, ni journaliste. Je ne peux vous parler que de ce que j’ai vécu. » Micro en main, ce vendredi 2 février, la nonagénaire s’adresse avec une voix assurée à trois classes de 3ᵉ du collège Endarra. Elle a été invitée par leur professeur d’histoire, Benjamin Aupée et par Lucille Labonne, documentaliste de l’établissement, pour venir parler aux élèves du réseau de résistance Comète.

Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Anglet a constitué une place stratégique pour acheminer vers l’Angleterre des aviateurs alliés tombés au-dessus de la Belgique, en passant par l’Espagne. Le réseau est né en Belgique et s’est développé à travers la France. Le Pays basque, et particulièrement Anglet, ont constitué une étape essentielle, pour préparer le passage de la frontière vers l’Espagne.
Our dear Christiane Saldias was 15 at the time and and here she is telling the story of Comète to young people. Invited by the Endarra college, Christiane Saldias, 95 years old, went to face 3rd grade students, this February 2, to talk about the Comète Network, of which Anglet was an essential step towards freedom for many allied airmen during the Second World War

"My name is Christiane Saldias. I am 95 years old. I am neither a professor nor a journalist. I can only tell you about what I experienced." Microphone in hand, this Friday, February 2, the nonagenarian speaks with a confident voice to three 3rd grade classes at Endarra college. She was invited by their history teacher, Benjamin Aupée, and by Lucille Labonne, the establishment's librarian, to come and speak to the students about the Comète resistance network.

During the Second World War, Anglet was a strategic location for transporting Allied airmen who were shot down over Belgium to England, via Spain. The network was born in Belgium and developed across France. The Basque Country, and particularly Anglet, constituted an essential step in preparing for the border crossing to Spain.
