49. Comète weekend le 9-11 septembre 2022

Chers membres, chers amis,

Après trois ans d'absence, nous sommes heureux de pouvoir enfin publier le programme pour notre long week-end commémoratif au Pays Basque cette année. Nous marcherons sur la route intérieure qui a été introduite à partir de 1943 en raison du renforcement de la sécurité sur l'itinéraire d'origine via la "Bidassoa".

Nous sommes très honorés d'avoir parmi nous une importante délégation de la Royal Air Force. Nous leur souhaitons la bienvenue avec comme invités d'honneur: Air Vice-Marshal Maria Byford RAF, chef d'état-major du personnel et secrétaire de l'Air, accompagnée de son mari le Air Commodore Alistair Byford, RAF (retraité) - lui-même un distingué pilote de Tornado - et beaucoup d'entre nous se souviendront du Group Captain Antony McCord, RAF, Attaché de l'Air, Paris, lors de sa première visite ici en 2019 - content de vous revoir!

Dans une "première" tant attendue pour nous, 10 aviateurs actifs du 33e Escadron, RAF Benson vont nous rejoindre et on pense que tous nos douze visiteurs participeront à la marche commémorative. Nous vous souhaitons à tous la plus chaleureuse des bienvenues.

Toutes nos excuses pour le retard dans la présentation de notre programme et des formulaires d'inscription, mais le processus de planification s'est avéré plus compliqué que d'habitude cette année.

After a three year absence, we're pleased to be able to publish the programme for our long commemorative weekend in the Pays Basque this year. We'll be walking over the inland route that was introduced from 1943 onwards due to tightened security on the original route via the 'Bidassoa'.

There will be a significant "Light Blue" element here as we welcome our honoured guests: Air Vice Marshal Maria Byford RAF, the Chief of Staff Personnel and Air Secretary, accompanied by her husband Air Commodore Alistair Byford, RAF (Retd) - himself a distinguished Tornado pilot - and many of us will remember Group Captain Antony McCord, RAF, Air Attaché, Paris from his first visit here in 2019 - welcome back to you, sir. 

In a long-awaited 'first' for us, ten serving aircrew from 33 Squadron, RAF Benson will also join us and it is believed that all twelve of our visitors will participate in the commemorative walk. We would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to you all.

48. Revue Trimestrielle - Quarterly Newsletter No 7

Chers amis et fidèles lecteurs,

Après deux années d'absences de commémorations plusieurs bonnes nouvelles.

Une nouvelle équipe vient de renforcer notre Conseil d’Administration, pour la plupart des jeunes, certains ayant un lien familial direct avec des personnages historiques du réseau Comète.

Ce nouveau numéro fort de témoignages exceptionnels tels que celui d’Andrée De Jongh; le compte rendu de Joxan Goikoechea, d'Hernani parent de Florentino; un nouvel épisode de la vie de George Duffee et la mobilisation exceptionnelle d’une jeune américaine - qui se passionne pour notre association depuis les US.

Nous venons également de clôturer notre programme de septembre dont les événements commémoratifs se dérouleront sur le passage intérieur avec au programme:

- une cérémonie officielle à Anglet devant la stèle du réseau Comete à laquelle participera une importante délégation de la Royal Air Force, avec des officiers supérieurs et des aviateurs qui participeront à nos marches.

- le survol de la cérémonie par deux Rafales de l’armée de l’air est en cours de discussion.

Nos deux journées de marches le samedi et le dimanche se dérouleront depuis l’auberge Larre du quartier Sutar à Anglet, puis Ustaritz, Larressore, Espelette avec le dimanche en pleine montagne sur le site Ihi Lepo, l’inauguration d'une pierre mémorielle relatant l’histoire de de passage, jusqu’à Jauregikoborda la ferme de Xan Mihura qui accueillait les aviateurs à Urdax en pleine montagne proche de la borne 76 du GR 10.

Revue Trimestrielle No 7 en français

Dear Members and Friends, 

After two fallow years during which we were unable to run our commemorative weekend, finally we have some good news for you. 

We have strengthened our committee with the addition of a new team, most of them young people (well, younger than us!), with some having a direct familial link with historical figures from the Comète network.

The latest issue of our Newsletter features some exceptional testimony - such as that from Andrée De Jongh; the account of Joxan Goikoechea, of Hernani (a relative of Florentino); a further instalment of George Duffee's epic story - and the excellent project on the Comète Line by Courtlin Pulliam, a 12 year old Californian girl - who became fascinated by the magnificent story.

We have also just finalised our September programme with commemorative events taking place on the inland route (via Larressore and Espelette) featuring:

- an official ceremony in Anglet in front of the Comete memorial in which a large delegation from the Royal Air Force will take part, with senior officers and, for the first time, some serving aircrew who will take part in our marches.

- an overflight of the evening ceremony by two French Air Force Rafales (to be confirmed).

Our two days of walks on Saturday and Sunday will start from the Larre Inn in the Sutar district of Anglet, then via Ustaritz, Larressore and Espelette. Sunday will see us up in the mountains where a memorial stone at Ihi Lepo will be inaugurated. It tells the story of the passage up to Jauregikoborda, the 'safe' farm of Xan Mihura, where many airmen rested up before continuing on. The farm is well hidden and it's near border marker 76 of the GR 10 footpath.

You will shortly be able to study our programme and the sign-up form that we will post here.

47. Revue Trimestrielle - Quarterly Newsletter N° 6

La dernière édition de notre Newsletter trimestrielle contient des lettres écrites par Lucienne Dassié et son père Jean-Edouard qui décrivent leur arrestation en mars 1943 et leur déportation ultérieure à Ravensbrück et Buchenwald. Ce n'est pas facile à lire mais c'est la réalité à laquelle les aides de Comète - et leurs familles - ont été confrontées. C'est un rappel effrayant du traitement infligé aux détenus du système des camps de concentration du Troisième Reich. C'est pourquoi Andrée De Jongh a prévenu les futurs assistants qu'ils ne pouvaient s'attendre à opérer que six mois maximum avant d'être arrêtés. L'occupant a estimé que les dispositions de la Convention de Genève ne s'appliquaient pas à ceux qui étaient pris en train d'aider des aviateurs en fuite.

Pour équilibrer les choses, il y a la section suivante du récit de George Duffee sur sa première sortie opérationnelle qui s'est transformée en un événement qui a changé sa vie. Enfin, il y a une nécrologie de "Monique" Hanotte, qui est malheureusement décédée peu de temps après son 101e anniversaire. J'ai eu le privilège de la rencontrer à Bruxelles en 2011 et elle m'a fait une impression remarquable. C'était une sacrée dame.

Dear Members and Friends, 

The latest edition of our Quarterly Newsletter includes letters written by Lucienne Dassié and her father Jean-Edouard that describe their arrest in March 1943 and their subsequent deportation to Ravensbrück and Buchenwald. It doesn't make for easy reading but this was the reality that Comète helpers - and their families - faced. It's a chilling reminder of the treatment that was meted out to inmates of the Third Reich's concentration camp system. It's why Andrée De Jongh warned prospective helpers that they could expect to operate only for a maximum of six months before being arrested. The Occupier took the view that the provisions of the Geneva Convention did not apply to those caught helping evading airmen.  

To balance things up, there's the next section of George Duffee's account of his first operational sortie that turned into a life-changing event for him. Finally, there's an obituary of "Monique" Hanotte, who sadly died not long after her 101th birthday. I was privileged to meet her up in Brussels in 2011 and she made a remarkable impression on me. She was quite some lady.

Nous regrettons et nous nous excusons d’avoir pris du retard pour la publication de notre revue trimestrielle. 

Tout cela a cause de l’épidémie qui est venue perturber les dates de réunion du comité de rédaction - mais nous nous esmettons déjà au travail pour rédiger la future édition afin de pouvoir publier l’édition No 6 dans les meilleurs délais.

We are pleased to share with you the latest issue of our newsletter - with our sincere apologies for its lateness. It consists of a brief outline of the programme for our commemorative weekend over 9-11th September 2022; some well-intentioned advice for evaders in WWII from the US 8th Air Force and the Royal Air Force; the story of Odile de Vasselot, a Comète guide; the opening chapter of the account by the late George Duffee in his own words of his evasion; a tribute to Alejandro Elizalde Iribarren who dedicated 10 years of his life to fighting for democracy; and, sadly, the news of the death of Henriette THOME, née HANOTTE, known to the Comète community by her wartime name of “Monique".

44. Revue Trimestrielle - Newsletter No 3

Le Conseil d'Administration des "Amis du réseau Comète" a le plaisir de vous adresser notre Revue Trimestrielle (No 3) qui contient, outre des informations sur la vie de l'association, un témoignage émouvant de Marthe Stanford-Bickerstaff de sa première visite ici en 2018. Martha était la fille d'un aviateur aidé par Comète qui a traversé la Bidassoa une nuit d'hiver - une nuit qui a vu deux autres évadés se noyer. Il y a aussi un bref compte rendu des évadés de la comète par Josepha Mihura, fille de Xan Mihura, qui a abrité le personnel navigant à Jauregiko Borda.

Soit dit en passant, si l'un d'entre vous a une histoire "Comet" à raconter que vous aimeriez voir dans le numéro 4, n'hésitez pas à me contacter;

The Management group of the "Friends of the Comet Line" is pleased to send you a link (below) to  our latest Newsletter (No 3) which contains, in addition to information on the life of the association, a moving account by Marthe Stanford-Bickerstaff of her first visit here in 2018. Martha was the daughter of a Comet evader who crossed the Bidassoa one wintry night - on a night that saw two evaders drown. There's also a brief account of Comet evaders by Josepha Mihura, daughter of Xan Mihura, who sheltered aircrew at Jauregiko Borda.
