Nous avons l’immense joie de vous présenter notre programme pour nos journées commémoratives. Elles se dérouleront les 8, 9 et 10 septembre.

Nous serons cette année sur la Bidassoa, sur les pas des aviateurs et des passeurs comme entre 1941 à 1943.

Je tiens à remercier tout particulièrement nos amis de Comète Bidassoa et leur Président Yoxan Goikoetchea, et toute son équipe, pour nos échanges cordiaux et très fructueux.

We are delighted to present you with our programme for our commemorative weekend, which will take place over 8th, 9th & 10th September.

This year we will be tackling the "classic" route via the Bidassoa, following in the footsteps of the Comète guides and the Allied aircrew evaders between 1941 and 1943.

I would particularly like to thank our friends from Comète Bidassoa and their President Yoxan Goikoetchea (Florentino's grandnephew), and his entire team, for our cordial and very fruitful exchanges.

53. Pourquoi une BD - why a Bande Déssinée?

Pourquoi une BD? C'est une longue histoire - mais l'événement qui a finalement déclenché la production de la Comète BD s'est produit lors d'un de nos récents week-ends Comète commémoratifs. En regardant autour de nous les participants, il nous a semblé que nous étions plus ou moins tous d'un âge 'avancé'. Comment transmettre aux nouvelles générations ? 

Il nous a semblé un bonne idée, que cette magnifique histoire du réseau Comète touche et inspire les jeunes générations. Surtout que beaucoup d'acteurs de Comète étaient eux-mêmes très jeunes, certains à Comète n'avaient que 15 ans tandis que d'autres les aviateurs n'avaient qu'une poignée d'années de plus.

Nous sommes intervenus dans plusieurs écoles dans la région pour parler aux élèves de Comète. Ils étaient surpris d'apprendre que cette histoire se soit déroulée dans les villes et villages dont ils connaissaient tous les lieux. Surpris, et à vrai dire assez émus aussi de découvrir cette nouvelle histoire, et du lien existant entre l’histoire de la Seconde Guerre avec un grand H et ces mêmes lieux, qu’ils fréquentaient tous les jours.

Comment se fait-il qu'ils ne connaissent pas ce magnifique chapitre de l'histoire locale? Il existe plusieurs livres consacrés à la narration de l'histoire de Comète ; il existe des sites Web et des blogs; il y a des vidéos sur YouTube – mais il semble que ces moyens de transmission de l'histoire de Comète ne soient pas parvenus à la jeunesse d'aujourd'hui.

En échangeant avec Mr Jean Michel Barate, Premier - Adjoint à la Mairie d’Anglet et Mme Liane Béobide, Directrice de la Culture - nous avons examiné toutes les pistes possibles (et abordables) qui s'offraient à nous pour raconter notre histoire. 

C'est Mme Béobide qui a souligné le fait que les jeunes d'aujourd'hui sont de grands lecteurs de BD et que les BD présentent plusieurs avantages par rapport aux autres possibilités médiatiques: ils sont portables ; n'a pas besoin d'énergie ; ils mêlent texte et images graphiques ; et ils peuvent être facilement échangés et diffusés entre amis.

Au final, nous avons pris la décision de réaliser une BD Comète - prise en charge financièrement dans son intégralité par la ville d'Anglet. Nous avons eu la chance de découvrir que « Marko » - un dessinateur de BD talentueux - vivait sur place et il a constitué une équipe composée de l'historien/scénariste Jean - Yves Lenahour; Inaki Holgado dans le rôle de l'artiste et coloriste Arheta Battistuta, de la compagnie Bamboo.

Plusieurs d'entre nous, de notre association, se sont associés aux auteurs, sous la direction de Mme Beobide, pour produire un bouleversant document qui figure en fin de chaque BD.

Nous remercions particulièrement les familles de Comète qui nous ont fourni des documents historiques émouvants. Nos guides Comète ont emmené les auteurs de la BD dans certains sites historiques, leur permettant ainsi d'appréhender 80 années après les lieux historiques et leurs paysages.

La Bande Dessinée a été officiellement présentée au public invité à la Mairie d'Anglet le 24 mai et mise en vente dans tous les points de vente habituels du territoire national.

Dans son discours, notre président a parlé de façon émouvante de notre association, de notre devoir de transmettre et pourquoi, avec l'accent que nous mettons sur les valeurs, elle est différente de toutes les autres.....

Comme il le dit lui-même.... " ce n'est pas une association de club de pétanque....." !

Why a Comic Strip?*

It’s a long story but the event that eventually triggered the production of the Comète Bande Dessinée (BD) occurred during one of our recent commemorative Comète weekends. On looking around the participants, it struck us that we were more or less all of a certain age group. In other words, we had no millennials with us! It seemed remarkable to us that this magnificent story of the Comète network hadn’t touched and inspired the younger generations – especially as many of those actively involved in Comète were themselves young - some of the Comète helpers were just 15 years old while some of the aviators were just a handful of years older.

* BDs are extremely popular in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. To the Anglophone ear, the use of a 'comic strip' to tell the story of Comète could sound a discordant note - but think of a BD as a story told graphically in drawn panels.   

We’d visited several schools in and around the local area to talk to pupils about Comète and while they were surprised to hear that this story had played out in the very towns and villages that they were all familiar with – we were surprised to find that it was all new to them. How was it that they were unfamiliar with this magnificent chapter of local history? There are several books devoted to the telling of the Comète story; there are websites and blogs; there are videos on YouTube – but it seemed that these means of transmitting the Comète story had bypassed today’s youth.

In discussions with Mr Jean Michel Barate and Mme Liane Béobide of the Town Hall, Anglet we examined all the possible (and affordable) avenues of approach open to us to tell our story. It was Mme Béobide who highlighted the fact that today’s youth are avid readers of BDs and that BDs have several advantages when compared to other media possibilities: they are portable; need no power supply; they mix text and graphic images; and they can be easily exchanged and circulated among friends.     

In the end, we took the decision to produce a Comète BD - financially supported in its entirety by the town of Anglet. We were fortunate to find that “Marko” - a talented BD designer – lived locally and he put a team together, comprising the historian/scriptwriter Jean - Yves Lenahour; Inaki Holgado as the artist and colourist Arheta Battistuta, from the Bamboo company.

A number of us from our association combined with the authors, under the direction of Mme  Beobide, the Director of Culture, Anglet, to produce a short history of Comète that is included at the end of the BD.

We would particularly like to thank the families of Comète who provided us with moving historical documents. Our Comète guides took the BD authors to some of the historic sites, thus enabling them to gain a sense of the landscape.   

The BD was formally presented to an invited audience at the Town Hall, Anglet on 24 May and it went on sale at all the usual outlets nationwide.

In his speech, our president spoke movingly of our association – and why, with our emphasis on values, it is different to all others. As he says himself – it’s not an association for pétanque.  

Please note: There will be a 'BD Comète' book signing by "Marko" and a 'round table' discussion between 5:00-7:00 p.m at the Librairie Elkar, Bayonne on Thursday, 7th September.

52. Randonnée Comète - Comet Hike 2023

Nous souhaitons vous informer de la prochaine parution de la Bande Dessinée de Comète. Entièrement financée par la mairie d’Anglet, elle a été réalisée par l’équipe de Bamboo. Les créateurs sont les dessinateurs Marko et Inaki Holgado et l’historien Jean Yves Lenahour. La coloriste est Aretha Battisttuta. Vous pouvez déjà la commander entre autre sur le site de la fnac ou Amazon.

Nous reviendrons avec un prochain article, après la soirée de présentation qui doit de dérouler le 24 mai prochain à la mairie d’Anglet.

We are pleased to inform you of the impending publication of the Comète Bande Dessinée (Comic Strip). Fully funded by Anglet Town Hall, it was created and produced by the Bamboo team, comprising the graphic designers 'Marko' and Inaki Holgado and the historian Jean Yves Lenahour. The Management group and our friends from Comète Bidassoa under the presidency of Joxan Goikoetxea met together at Biriatou on 29th April to discuss the programme for September 2023.

Queridos miembros, queridos amigos

Nuestro fin de semana conmemorativo de Comète tendrá lugar del 8 al 10 de septiembre de 2023 en la ruta 'Classic' (también conocida como 'Bidassoa'), desde Ciboure, Urrugne, Bidassoa antes de terminar en Sarobe Farm.

Las actividades del viernes 8 consistirán en nuestro AG seguido de ceremonias por la tarde y noche.

El sábado 9 y el domingo 10 estarán dedicados a la caminata por el recorrido original de los Pirineos utilizado por los guías Comet y los evasores desde 1941 hasta 1943, después de lo cual fue suplantado mayoritariamente por el recorrido interior.

Recomendamos que los participantes se basen para fines de alojamiento en Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Septiembre todavía es temporada alta en la Costa Vasca, por lo que se recomienda a los participantes que hagan sus arreglos de alojamiento pronto.
