10. Marche Commémorative 2015

                                                                                     Anglet, le 11 avril 2015.

Chers Amis,

                  Vous qui êtes des « Fidèles à notre association », avant de vous communiquer le programme détaillé 2015, je tiens à vous informer que nos Journées Commémoratives se dérouleront cette année les 11 , 12  &  13  Septembre  2015.

Evènement important, cette année nous rendrons un dernier hommage vendredi 11 septembre devant la VILLA VOISIN qui sera rasée pour laisser place à une petite résidence de standing , comportant  7 appartements, et dont le nom sera «  RESIDENCE COMETE ». Ce lieu restera un haut lieu de mémoire COMETE.

La première journée de marche du samedi 12/09 nous conduira du cimetière de Socoa, après un hommage à Kattalin AGUIRRE et Florentino GOICOETCHEA, au monument aux morts d’Urrugne. Ensuite nous rendrons un ultime hommage à la ferme Bidegainberri, où furent arrêtés Andrée DE JONGH, Frantxa USANDIZAGA, Juan LARBURU et les 3 aviateurs FS Stan HOPE, Sgt Bill Greaves et Sgt George ROSS.

Nous reprendrons le chemin de la montagne basque pour terminer notre marche sur les rives de la BIDASSOA, que nous traverserons, pour finir notre journée avec la fameuse sardinade à San Miguel préparée par nos amis d’URDABURU. 

La 2è journée de marche du dimanche 13/09 nous amènera des rives de la Bidassoa, en passant par la ferme Sarobe à Oïartzun, à Errenteria ou la commémoration 2015 se terminera par un repas de clôture.

Dear Friends,

         Before sending out the detailed programme for September 2015, I wish to inform you - the « Faithful supporters of our association » - that our Commemorative Weekend will take place this year on 11^th, 12^th and 13^th September 2015. 

This year will see us making our final homage in front of the “Villa Voisin” on Friday, 11th September as it is unfortunately scheduled to be demolished in October to make way for a small complex of seven apartments. The new apartment complex will bear the name “RESIDENCE COMETE” and thus the location will remain linked to COMETE as a place of memory for us. 

The first day of the walk on Saturday 12th September will take us to the cemetery at Socoa where we'll pay homage to Kattalin AGUIRRE and Florentino GOICOETCHEA. After a short walk, there will be a further ceremony at the War Memorial at Urrugne. This will be followed by the final homage of the day at Bidegain berri farm, where Andrée DE JONGH, Frantxa USANDIZAGA, Juan LARBURU and 3 RAF aircrew - FS Stan HOPE, Sgt Bill GREAVES and Sgt George ROSS - were all arrested.

We will then take the wartime paths up and over the Basque mountains and down to the river BIDASSOA. We'll wade across the river to finish our day on the river bank with the traditional grilled sardines and cider at San Miguel kindly prepared by our friends from URDABURU.   

The second day of the walk on Sunday 13th September will see us setting off from the banks of the BIDASSOA to Sarobe farm at Oïartzun, then to Errenteria where the Commemoration 2015 will close with a farewell meal. Thank you in advance for passing on these dates to your friends and other Comète sympathisers.

8. Comète weekend 2015

A noter pour votre agenda: les dates pour le week-end 2015 de Comète au Pays Basque sont les 11, 12 et 13 Septembre. Cette année, nous allons marcher sur la route classique de la  "Bidassoa". Il est prévu de vous envoyer  le programme complet en Avril.

Please note for your diary: the dates for the annual Comète weekend in the Pays basque will be 11th, 12th & 13th September 2015. This year we will walk over the original "Bidassoa" route. It is anticipated that the full programme will be published in April.

Au cours de la nuit du 23-24 décembre 1943, un groupe d’évadés (aviateurs et civils) conduit par les guides du réseau Comète se mit en route pour passer de la France occupée à l’Espagne franquiste en franchissant les Pyrénées à pied. 

C’était une marche épuisante et il fallait traverser la rivière Bidassoa qui était haute après plusieurs jours de pluie. Deux évadés - le comte Antoine d’Ursel (ancien chef de Comète de Belgique) et le sous-lieutenant James F Burch, USAAF, furent emportés par le courant et périrent noyés. 

Les Allemands récupérèrent leurs corps le lendemain qu’ils exposèrent un court moment dans le porche de l’église Saint Martin à Biriatou avant de les faire disparaitre. On n’a jamais retrouvé les corps. Le sous-lieutenant Jim Burch fut le seul aviateur à avoir perdu la vie alors qu’il était sous la protection de Comète.

During the night of 23-24th December 1943, a ten-strong mixed party of evaders (airmen and civilians) led by Comet Line guides set out on foot from occupied France to cross the Pyrenees into Francoist Spain.

This was a gruelling hike and it involved a night crossing of the river Bidassoa which was running high after days of rain. Two evaders - Count Antoine d'Ursel (former chief, Comète Belgium) and 2nd Lt James F Burch, USAAF - were swept away and drowned. The Germans recovered their bodies the next day, and displayed them briefly in the porch of Saint Martin's church at Biriatou before removing them later. Their bodies have never been found. 2nd Lt Jim Burch was the only airman to have lost his life while in Comet's hands.

6. Comète weekend 12-14 Septembre 2014
