13. Comète Commémoratif weekend 2015 - retour d'information - feed back

14th October 2015. Je voudrais demander à tous ceux qui ont pris des photos pendant le week-end d'avoir la gentillesse de nous envoyer des copies ici via le Webmestre. Je les assemblerai dans une vidéo que je publierai sur le site. Merci beaucoup!

12. 2e / 2nd Lt James Frederick Burch, USAAF

La mauvaise préparation de la traversée de la rivière de la Bidassoa en crue durant la nuit du 23-24 décembre 1943 a eu pour conséquence la mort par noyade du Comte Antoine d'Ursel (ancien chef de Comète Belgique) et du sous-lieutenant James Frederick Burch, USAAF. L'histoire est décrite au Post N° 7.    The ill-advised crossing of the river Bidassoa in flood during the night of 23rd-24th December 1943 resulted in the tragic deaths by drowning of Count Antoine d'Ursel (former head of Comète Belgium) and 2nd Lt James Frederick Burch, USAAF. C'est seulement après avoir lu le livre de Peter Eisner "The Freedom Line", et nous être rendus plusieurs fois sur les rives de la Bidassoa que notre attention s'est portée plus intensément sur cette particulière traversée de la Bidassoa.  In reading countless stories of successful evasions we can sometimes be blind to the obvious. It was only after reading Peter Eisner's inspirational "The Freedom Line" and several visits to the banks of the Bidassoa that caused us to focus on this particular crossing.  Les circonstances qui entourèrent cette traversée étaient particulières: Florentino Goicoetchea, le montagnard Pyrénéen Basque légendaire, était malade et indisponible; le groupe s'élevait à 10 et la rivière était trés haute. Des coups de feu furent tirés du côté espagnol, et dans la confusion de cette nuit noire, les deux hommes furent emportés par le courant et périrent noyés.    The circumstances that surrounded the crossing were unusual: Florentino Goicoetchea, the legendary Basque mountain guide, was sick and unavailable; the crossing party was 10 strong, and the river was in flood. Shots were fired from the Spanish side and in the splashing and the confusion on a black night, two men were swept away by a wintry Bidassoa and perished.  Il est vrai qu'il y a une stèle commémorative pour le Comte d'Ursel, mais rien pour Jim Burch, c'est bien triste. Nous, "Les amis du réseau Comète", avons décidé que même 70 ans plus tard, son sacrifice, sa mort méritaient une stèle commémorative pour que les générations futures puissent poser les questions - qui - quoi - pourquoi.. Nous avons donc décidé de mettre en route le projet d'ériger une stèle commémorative sur la rive de la Bidassoa pour Jim Burch, le seul aviateur à avoir péri alors qu'il était sous la protection de Comète.  Yes, there's a memorial to Count d'Ursel but, sadly and unaccountably, there is not one for Jim.. We, in "Les Amis..", decided that even 70 years on, that his sacrifice and his passing merited a memorial so that future generations may be prompted to ask who, what and why. Accordingly, we have started a project to provide a memorial on the river bank to Jim Burch, the only aviator to lose his life while in Comète's hands.  Nous avons trouvé un marbrier qui fournira la pierre, gravera l'inscription et érigera la stèle sur la rive de la Bidassoa. Nous lançons donc un appel aux dons. A ce jour (14 septembre) nous avons déjà un bon nombre de dons. Il y a 4 options: 10€, 25€, 50€ & 100€. S'il vous plaît, soyez généreux. We have found a stonemason who will furnish us with a granite memorial stone, engrave a suitable inscription and erect it at the riverside. We are therefore launching an appeal for donations to finance this project. At the time of writing (14th September) we have a healthy number of donations. Marche commémorative de CIBOURE à ERRENTERIA sur les chemins empruntés par les passeurs du Réseau Comète et les aviateurs alliés durant la 2è Guerre Mondiale.

                                                                     

IMPORTANT

Ce programme concerne tout le monde. Par contre, les marcheurs devront notamment se procurer leurs propres victuailles ou casse-croûtes pour les 2 jours de randonnée. 

Attention: Pour la journée du Dimanche 13 Septembre le nombre de participants au repas de midi à la "Sociédad de BERAUN-BERA" est limité à 85 personnes. Les inscriptions seront enregistrées au fur et à mesure de leurs transmissions. Pour les inscriptions +++ un repas au même tarif est prévu dans un restaurant avoisinant.
