C’est avec un profond regret et une grande tristesse que nous devons annoncer le décès de l’éminent évadé de Comète George Duffee survenu le 21 décembre 2018 à l’âge de 94 ans. Janet, son épouse bien-aimée, l’avait précédé de 2½ semaines. Ils étaient mariés depuis 72 ans.
Ils ont formé un couple très uni tout au long de leur vie et il était touchant de les voir toujours aussi amoureux après toutes ces années passées ensemble. C’était un gentleman plein de charisme aux yeux pétillants et enjoué. Il personnifiait l’esprit de cette grande génération que nous ne reverrons certainement plus. Il est resté fidèle aux nobles idéaux qui l’ont conduit pendant cette période sombre.
Au cours de sa première mission opérationnelle avec l’escadrille 78 comme 2ème pilote (c’est à dire co-pilote pour une opération d’acclimatation), l’avion (Halifax) de George eu la malchance d’être abattu par un pilote de chasse allemand comme il revenait de Mulheim la nuit du 22-23 juin 1943. Il m’a dit qu’il avait quitté la maison de ses parents à Londres après une semaine de congé le 22 et moins de 24 heures plus tard il se retrouvait planté dans un champ de pommes de terre au petit matin près de Beugt, Noord-Brabant aux Pays-Bas.
Aidé par le réseau Comète, il fut le 144ème évadé à franchir les Pyrénées, ce qui lui prit 14 heures par une nuit très pluvieuse de septembre. Cette marche forcée marqua beaucoup ce garçon de 19 ans qu’il était et après la guerre il revint souvent en Belgique et au Pays Basque remercier les membres de Comète qui lui avaient sauvé la vie en risquant la leur.

De retour au Royaume Uni, il accomplit encore 39 missions en tant que pilote avec l’escadrille 78 et reçut la croix du service distingué (DFC) dans l’aviation. Après la guerre il joua un rôle actif dans le pont aérien de Berlin avec la Royal Air Force et Bond Air Services avant de travailler pour British European Airways (BEA) en passant de Vikings aux Dakotas, Viscounts et Tridents pour enfin devenir commandant de bord instructeur sur Tristars. Il poursuivit une carrière distinguée avec British Airways et il appréciait vivement comme il le disait le fait que "il pouvait piloter sans que personne ne lui tire dessus", puis prit sa retraite en Espagne en 1979. En 2007, George et Janet revinrent au Royaume Uni à Aberaeron dans le Ceredigion au Pays de Galles pour se rapprocher de leur fils Tim et de leur fille Helen.

George ecrivit ce qui suit en 2013: "en 1947 je suis retourné à Bruxelles avec ma femme et ai logé chez le professeur et Madame Pirart et par eux ai rencontré Andrée de Jongh et son amie Germaine, une survivante comme elle de Ravensbruck. Nous avons continué à rendre visite aux membres de Comète qui nous avaient aidés, Michou Dumon ("Lily") et sa soeur Andrée ("Nadine") à Bruxelles chaque année ainsi que d’autres membres de la Royal Air Force Escape Society jusqu’à sa dissolution en 1995".

"En 1951, cette fois avec notre fils Tim, nous sommes retournés à Saint-Jean-de-Luz et avons séjourné chez Kattalin Aguirre à Ciboure et en 1955 (cette fois avec Tim et Helen) je franchis à nouveau les Pyrénées avec Florentino. Nous continuons de revenir à Saint-Jean-de-Luz et avec "Nadine", la soeur de Lily Dumon, nous déposons des gerbes sur les tombes de Kattalin et Florentino tandis que les plus jeunes membres de nos familles franchissent les Pyrénées à pied".

It is with deep regret and much
sadness that we have to announce the passing of noted Comète evader George Duffee on 21st December 2018 aged 94. Janet, his beloved wife, predeceased him
by 2½ weeks. They had been married for 72 years.
They were truly a devoted couple
and it was touching to see that after all these years, they were still clearly
very much in love. He was a charismatic gentleman, with an ever-present twinkle in his eye and always ready with a quip. He epitomised the spirit of that great
generation, the like of which I doubt we'll ever see again. He remained true to
the noble ideals that saw him through that dark period of history.

Helped by Comète, he was the 144th evader to cross
the Pyrenees, which he did on a wet September night in 1943 during the course
of an extended 14 hour crossing. This epic slog made a lasting impression on
19 year old George and after the war he returned many times to Belgium and the Pays Basque to thank those of
Comète who'd given him his life back at great personal risk to themselves.
On returning to the UK, he went
on to fly 39 further operational missions with 78 Squadron and he was subsequently awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). Post war, he was actively involved in the
Berlin airlift with the RAF and Bond Air Services before joining British European Airways (BEA) where he
progressed from Vikings, Dakotas, Viscounts and Tridents before ultimately
becoming a Training Captain on Tristars. He enjoyed a distinguished
career with British Airways where, as he would say, "No-one shot at me - it
was lovely!" before retiring to Spain in 1979. In 2007, George and Janet returned to the UK to Aberaeron, Ceredigion in West Wales to be nearer to son Tim and daughter Helen.
George wrote the following in 2013: "In 1947, I returned to Brussels with my wife and again stayed with Professor and Mme Pirart and through them met Andrée de Jongh and her friend Germaine, a fellow survivor of Ravensbruck. We continued to visit our Comete helpers, Michou Dumon ("Lily") and her sister Andrée ("Nadine") in Brussels every year, together with other members of the Royal Air Forces Escaping Society, until it was disbanded in 1995."
"In 1951, this time with our son Tim, we returned to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and stayed at Kattalin Aguirre's house in Ciboure and in 1955, (visiting with Tim and Helen), I was once again walking over the Pyrenees with Florentino. We still visit St Jean de Luz to this day and together with Lily Dumon's sister Nadine, lay wreaths on the graves of Kattalin and Florentino whilst the younger members of our families walk over the Pyrenees together."

He was treated to a ride on the same bicycle which had been lent to me and returned with a message that we should visit Martin. This was the beginning of a lifelong friendship which culminated in Martin celebrating his 80th birthday with us in Spain. This year, his daughter Uus joined us for the Escape Lines Memorial Society (ELMS) annual reunion dinner in York."
For a man who had experienced such a full and active life the cruel restrictions placed upon George by the advancing years were just another challenge for him to overcome with his customary stoicism, bravery and grace; and his insistence on outliving Janet yet another example of his gallantry and lifelong consideration for her.
